On Saturday, Oct. 12 不良研究所 hosted its inaugural International Symposium on Social Justice and the Teaching of World Literature on the Broadway campus. This first-time event was organized by faculty in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) English department, with the goal of generating broader conversations among educators and students from different disciplines to exchange theoretical and pedagogical ideas. The inspiration behind the event was to create a platform to consider how world literature is taught across disciplines in the context of today鈥檚 social justice issues.

On Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12, 不良研究所鈥檚 Singers Workshop ensemble performed a production of 鈥淭he Magic Flute,鈥 an opera composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The libretto, or the text intended for an opera or musical, was written by Emanuel Schikaneder. With music sung in German, the performance follows the adventures of Prince Tamino and his comical companion, Papageno, on their search to rescue the Queen of the Night's daughter, Pamina. The Magic Flute is one of the most famous operas of all time with music that is recognizable even to those who are not otherwise familiar with the work.

Dazhir Walker has been drawn to music almost as long as he鈥檚 been alive. His fascination with exploring notes, rhythms and chords began in his childhood as he played with toy pianos and xylophones. Any time he saw a piano 鈥 whether at school, a store or anywhere else 鈥 he had to play it, experimenting with putting different notes together. This musical spark was set ablaze when he started fourth grade and attended a music class during the school day.

At 不良研究所, Political Science and Pre-Law students are eligible to enroll in the 鈥淢oot Court鈥 course, a class that provides a high impact, applied learning experience focused on the basics of constructing and delivering appellate arguments. The course simulates an undergraduate competition for oral and written advocacy administrated by the American Moot Court Association (AMCA). The class, like the competition, utilizes a legal hypothetical and list of case authorities for which students must read, brief, and integrate case law into their own appellate-style arguments. Participation in the course not only prepares them for, but also provides students the opportunity to compete in the actual AMCA national tournament.

Students in 不良研究所鈥檚 Theatre Arts practicum class were invited to attend a lecture by David Grindle, executive director of the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) on Oct. 8. Grindle gave a workshop on communication and hosted a roundtable discussion with theatre students who have a specific interest in management in the entertainment industry.

The department will kick off its 2021-2022 season with the comedic play All Hail Hurricane Gordo by Carly Mensch. The show will open October 1, 2021 in the Coates Theatre on the 不良研究所 Broadway campus.

鈥湶涣佳芯克 is a school that feels like home.鈥 Ambar Valtierra, a senior in 不良研究所鈥檚 Music Therapy program, moved to Houston from San Antonio at age two. After attending two other higher education schools before becoming a Cardinal, she is happy to be back home in the Alamo City and at 不良研究所.

不良研究所 is proud to announce that Dr. Heather Barton-Weston, assistant professor and public health coordinator in the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions; Dr. Nile Barnes, assistant professor of Pharmacy; and Dr. Maria Felix-Ortiz, professor and chair of Psychology, obtained $32,000 of stipends from Interfaith Youth Core鈥檚 (IFYC) Faith in the Vaccine grant for 不良研究所 students to serve as 鈥渧axambassadors鈥 who promote vaccination against COVID-19.
