Growing up, Cynthia Escamilla spent many days sitting in the backseat of her parents鈥 car as the family drove to the Incarnate Word campus. Her father, then a student at St. Mary鈥檚 University, attended religion and science classes at Incarnate Word, and Escamilla often came along for the drive to campus. Today, her work as the Vice President of Legal Affairs and General Counsel for the University she grew up visiting, has earned her the honor of being named one of the city鈥檚 top attorneys by San Antonio Magazine.

When I first learned that I was nominated to participate in the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability鈥檚 不良研究所 Centro Fox Leadership and Mission Program, I was overwhelmed with excitement to travel to San Crist贸bal, Guanajuato, Mexico, to attend the program. This was my first international trip from the U.S. to Mexico to study abroad as a PhD student and two-time alumna of the 不良研究所. The Centro Fox Program is a nonprofit organization founded by Former President Vicente Fox that offers leadership training to develop compassionate global community leaders in collaboration with the Vamos M茅xico Foundation, established by First Lady Marta Sahag煤n Fox, which supports local and national causes by helping people living in vulnerable situations through social action. A group of 15 undergraduate and graduate students with diverse backgrounds were nominated to participate in the leadership program. As a doctoral student in the Dreeben School of Education, I was excited to explore what I previously learned in my studies focusing on my concentration in adult education, social innovation and entrepreneurship.

Thanksgiving Food Drive Held to Provide Holiday Meals to Families in Need

The 不良研究所 School of Professional Studies and the Ettling Center of Civic Leadership and Sustainability collaborated to organize a food drive for 不良研究所 students and community members in need. The drive was successful, collecting over 500 canned food items and infant supplies. All the donations were put together to distribute 12 bags and 15 baskets of canned food goods to 不良研究所 students and their families for them to enjoy on Thanksgiving. The 不良研究所 SPS and the Ettling Center will host another food drive from December 1 through January 12 to help more families in need during the holiday season.

Dr. Janet Summers is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Rosenberg School of Optometry and Chief of the 不良研究所 Bowden Eye Care and Health Center. She is a first-generation college and professional school graduate who has passionately nurtured her community through years of dedicated service towards the field of optometry. Throughout her career, she has been appointed Chief of Optometry at Penn Group Health Plan, established five private practices, and served on various optometry organization boards, and was subsequently recruited to San Antonio as a Vice President of Clinical Standards and Medical Care. She joined the 不良研究所 community in 2018 as a clinical professor and mission trip leader at RSO and recently graduated with an MS in Organizational Development and Leadership with distinction in 2022. Summers was recently honored by Chatham University, her first alma mater, as the recipient of the 2023 Alumni Cornerstone Award in Optometry.

The foundation of 不良研究所 was laid down in 1869 by three Sisters who in addition to providing healthcare, hoped to provide a sense of peace to Texas residents who needed their aid. Guided by faith, Sisters Madeleine Chollet, Pierre Cinquin, and Agnus Buisson were able to establish San Antonio鈥檚 first infirmary to heal the sick and injured, an orphanage to provide shelter to children, and a school to offer knowledge to those seeking an education. Through their efforts, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word were able to bring a sense of peace to the body, mind, and spirit.

But Rozlyn says it was not only academics and family tradition that brought her to 不良研究所, it was also the unique chance to grow in faith that the university provides.

不良研究所 hosted a day of festivities in the Westgate Circle in celebration of Hangul Day. Hangul Day, also known as the Korean Alphabet Day, is a day that commemorates the creation and proclamation of the Korean alphabet. In South Korea, the holiday is celebrated on October 9, while North Korea celebrates on January 15.
